Apps Getting Around & Sightseeing

Apps Italy Getting Around & Sightseeing. Part II of my Apps Italy series.

These are the apps you will need, for your next trip to Il Bel Paese. As you know, for the Apps Italy series, I use the ‘mobile rating system’ (📱) over the overused ‘star rating system’.

As the title would suggest, these are the best apps to use when deciding how to get around in Italy and the best apps to help you sight seeing, when you just do not want to bring a guide book! These apps have been used by yours truly and I have found them very useful!

Getting Around

Moovit

In app purchases: None.

Why you should download it: Hands down, this is my favourite app for how to get around Italy. I discovered this about 18 months ago and have not stopped using it, whenever I need to get public transport, whether I am in Rome or Milan! Live Directions with Get Off Notifications guide, Real Time Arrival information, and super important for Italy is the Service Alerts (if there is a strike, you will know in advance!). An absolute must have for all those visiting Italy so this app gets my top Mobile Rating.

it Taxi

In app purchases: None.

Why you should download it: Since public transportation is not always reliable in many parts of Italy, a taxi is your only option. It is basically Italy’s taxi association app, to fight Uber. I have given it 4 Mobile rating because you have to register and you will need to add a mobile number – the verification code comes via SMS only. It is handy because you have the option to see the price of the fare and you complete payment with PayPal and credit cards (Visa/Mastercard) so you do not need to have cash with you. You can also track your trip and track the cap.

Locomotimes

Why you should download it: A handy tool for planning your train strip. This allows you to see all the the times for Trenitalia (regional + high speed) trains and Italo (only high speed) trains. 3 mobile rating because only available in Italian and with the Moovit app, this has come a little superfluous but still useful for exact train times. Still useful for the regional options.

Why you should download it: This may seem like a ‘given’ but I’m surprised at how many still do not have this app on their phone! When renting a car, no need for a GPS system, when you have a 4G connection on your phone (going to a Vodafone or TIM store is easy and plans start at 20EUR for 2GB). Very useful tool, even for city driving (like in Rome for example) and it helps avoid the “Zona a Traffico Limitato” (ZTL – Limited Traffic Zone) when you set it on the ‘tool free’ routes.

Sightseeing

Zonzofox

Why you should download it: Covers all of Italy, made specifically for Italy. Until I am able to create my own app for Italy, I think this will be a useful addition, for those cities I have not been able to cover yet! For small towns, it provides mini-guides, while for the bigger the cities, it offers free full guides. I believe this more useful than purchasing a hardcopy guide book as it uses your location (what doesn’t?) and I found that even for Rome, it offers some pretty useful tips.

Why you should download it: 500 state museums and archaeological sites in Italy, this app gives you access to; contacts, websites, opening hours, entrance ticket prices and guided tours. Find info on museum collections, archaeological excavations and a selection of images of the most representative works. 4 mobile rating due to some cool features (in app music and georeferencing). Have a list of the major exhibitions taking place in Italy! All on one app! Clunky interface which could be improved but still a great app to have.

Have you got some apps you would like to add to these, that you found particularly helpful? Apps Italy Getting Around & Sightseeing is created to help you with some apps to download, prior to your trip to The Boot.
